Red Dog Saloon, Hoxton

Last Sunday, Matthew, Darzi, Jono and I donned our beanie hats and elbow patches and headed off to Shoreditch to celebrate Jono’s birthday in true Jono style… a mighty feast.

Elbow patches and beanie hats not actually represented in photo. Except Darzi, girl lives in a beanie.

Anywho, being a family who are all about their American diner grub, we had made plans to go to the Red Dog Saloon in Hoxton – known for its Man vs. Food worthy food challenges; the INSANE hot wings challenge (made with Naga Viper chilli’s… one of the world’s hottest chilli’s!) and the Devastator Challenge (an ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ burger).

Armed with a reservation, we were instantly escorted through the busy and bustling restaurant, downstairs to an almost empty underground dining area.

We were given a mahoosive booth to ourselves, so we were definitely taken up by the much cosier, relaxed atmosphere…. helped by the slow smooth jazz/blues/soul music playing in the background. Oh, and the super lovely and super silly waiter! So yeah, I highly recommend booking in advance to avoid the wait!

Food wise we opted not to go for either of the challenges on THIS occasion. Though, I plan to take on the hot wings in the future … but to takeaway… and in the privacy of my own home! Dignity, can I have it?

As all good things should begin… we started with mozzarella sticks.

We then continued our onslaught… onto various burgers…. e.g. The Punisher.

But more importantly… onto pulled pork.

Not the greatest of pictures, but I was far too excited and hungry to wait!

And it was glorious.

So succulent, with that amazing smoky bbq flavour … and oh my, those cripsy burnt bits! Yuuuuum. Especially when covered in their sweet, tangy, yet spicy ‘Kansas City’ sauce. Didn’t even think to ask what it was exactly, I was too busy chowing down.

Empty plates all round… a sign of a restaurant i’ll be visiting again!

We then headed home….via fancy lights and Dad’s work.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special…. Cupcakes.

I love Doctor Who.

Just getting that out there.

It’s been one of those ‘sit down with the family on a Saturday evening’ tv shows ever since it got revived back in 2005. Damn, has it really been 8 years?! What?!

So it comes to no surprise that i’d been absolutely buzzing about the 50th anniversary special, ‘The Day of the Doctor’, for months!

…and today the wait was over!

Can I just say I would totally back a spin off series where Matt Smith and David Tennant, playing their Doctor’s, travelled across time and space together saving the world/universe….no matter how unfounded that would be.

Can I also adopt John Hurt as my grandpa?

And was I the only one who got stupidly giddy when Peter Capaldi came on screen? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Anyways, to commemorate the occasion my brother and I attempted to make some Doctor Who themed cupcakes. As you do.

Ahhhh look at them go!

Now, since it was a spontaneous decision I may have taken a LOT  a few of shortcuts…

The chocolate cake recipe was pretty simple:

Ingredients

100g self-raising flour

20g cocoa powder

1½tsp baking powder

140g caster sugar

40g unsalted butter

120ml whole milk

1 egg

1tsp vanilla extract

Method

Preheat oven at 180°C.

Cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.

In a separate bowl, mix together the dry ingredients.

In another bowl, mix together the wet ingredients.

Add each mixture in turn to the butter/sugar mixture until you get a smooth batter.

Fill in cupcake cases and bake for 20mins.

Then when we got to the decorating stage, it generally involved a lot of ‘winging it’ with the help of a random assortment of baking stuff I decided to put in my trolley:

blue food gel food colouring

large and mini white marshmallows

pack of writing icing

gold decorative balls

candy stick sweets

pretzel sticks

tub of ready-made cream cheese frosting (I know, I know, I cheated!)

pack of red ready-to-roll royal icing (I know, such a cheater!)

tube of ready-to-pipe chocolate icing (Yeah, i’m going to hell.)

But all in all, we were pretty impressed with what we came up with… despite trying to rush out a recipe before Matt Smith graced my screen!

Now, excuse me whilst I go watch it again.

Real Street Food Festival & SORTED Food Meet Up!

Eleven days ago (there’s a reason why so specific, promise!) we went down to the Real Street Food Festival and got some rather nice grub.

Oh, and met SORTED Food.

No big deal.
